My grandfather Fidel, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in January of 2009. My family was totally devastated and had no idea how to care for someone with such a serious illness. I was living with my grandfather at the time of his diagnoses and made every effort to grocery shop for him, although it became very difficult to get him the proper nutrition he needed. I would come home from work and find him trying to cook for himself. I would see his hands shake from the pain and began to worry about his safety in the kitchen. The doctors discussed nursing homes with us but we could not imagine taking my grandfather from the home that he had lived in for 30 years. I contacted a social worker and set my grandpa up for home delivered meals through Community Nutrition Network. My grandfather loved receiving the food! He would be ready for the volunteer each afternoon and never failed to eat almost everything that was delivered. When I would come home he’d tell me about the volunteer that brought his lunch and always said how nice they were. It was such a relief to my family to know that there was someone to stop in and say hello to him every day while we were at work. On St. Patrick’s Day the volunteers delivered my grandfather chocolates with an Irish prayer and even though he was diabetic he kept the prayer & chocolates on his table because he liked them so much. Community Nutrition Network provided my grandfather nutritious meals and friendship up until he passed away this April. My family and I are forever grateful to all the volunteers and staff members of CNNSSA for helping my grandpa Fidel remain independent and in his home for the last months of his life.
Community Nutrition Network & Senior Services Association serves meals to seniors 60 years and older and their spouses of any age. To receive Home-Delivered meals, one must be assessed by a Case Coordination Unit to determine the level of their need so they may receive the proper services.
